Volunteer: Help Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Cultivate Our Geer Street Learning Garden!

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a North Carolina based non-profit organization, and partner with the Feeding America Network. Our Learning Gardens fall under our "GROW" initiative - helping to combat food insecurity by bringing neighbors together to promote local food production.

The Geer Street Learning Garden is a flourishing urban green space located between one of the most vulnerable census tracts and one of the most prosperous business districts in Durham. The garden has twelve vegetable beds, community garden beds, fruit trees, an outdoor kitchen, a small greenhouse, a vermicompost system, a perennial rain garden, a pollinator garden and areas for community gatherings...all on only a quarter-acre lot!  Conveniently located in Durham’s urban food corridor, the garden neighbors include Reinvestment Partners, Farmer Foodshare, and an urban demonstration apiary managed by Bee Downtown. The heart of the Geer Street Learning Garden is the countless community partnerships we have built in Durham.

During a shift, volunteers will assist with general gardening tasks such as seasonal harvesting, packing, planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, and greenhouse work. Come prepared to bend, kneel, and lift medium to heavy items to complete our daily tasks.

Volunteer: Help Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Cultivate Our Food Bank Learning Garden!

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a North Carolina based non-profit organization, and partner with the Feeding America Network. Our Learning Gardens fall under our "GROW" initiative - helping to combat food insecurity by bringing neighbors together to promote local food production.

The Food Bank Learning Garden is a vibrant example of urban gardening and of the collaboration between sister Feeding America Food Banks. Once operated by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, the garden is now under the care of Inter-Faith Food Shuttle due to state and federal budget cuts that have impacted hunger relief organizations state-wide. We are honored to take on this responsibility, and to continue the legacy that this garden has made for the local community.

During a shift, volunteers will assist with general gardening tasks such as seasonal harvesting, packing, planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, and greenhouse work. Come prepared to bend, kneel, and lift medium to heavy items to complete our daily tasks.

Volunteer: Help Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Cultivate Our Camden Street Learning Garden!

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a North Carolina based non-profit organization, and partner with the Feeding America Network. Our Learning Gardens fall under our "GROW" initiative - helping to combat food insecurity by bringing neighbors together to promote local food production.

Camden Street Learning Garden is more than a green space in the middle of a city. It's where kids, families, and individuals can be in nature, connect with one another, and grow fruits and vegetables that nourish their lives.  The garden is situated on an acre of land in downtown Raleigh and features over twenty raised beds, a 400-sq.ft. production garden, a food forest, a 5,200 gallon rainwater catchment system, two beehives, a greenhouse, a composting facility, and a covered outdoor classroom. It is a space that provides community members with the opportunity to cultivate new relationships as they find out where their food comes from, how to grow it, and how to turn it into healthy and affordable meals.

During a shift, volunteers will assist with general gardening tasks such as seasonal harvesting, packing, planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, and greenhouse work. Come prepared to bend, kneel, and lift medium to heavy items to complete our daily tasks.

Volunteer: Van/Mini-Bus Drivers for Weekday Trips

Able to Serve is seeking caring and dependable Van/Mini-Bus Drivers to support our Day Program serving adults with disabilities. Drivers transport participants to community outings, service projects, recreational activities, and special events throughout the month. This volunteer role is perfect for individuals who enjoy driving, engaging with others, and being part of meaningful experiences that help our participants grow and connect in the community.

The purpose of this role is to provide safe, reliable, and welcoming transportation so participants can actively engage beyond our walls. Transportation plays a key part in fostering independence, life skills development, and meaningful service opportunities. By helping participants get where they need to go, drivers directly support our mission of empowering every individual to live a full and purposeful life.

Safety is the highest priority in this role. Drivers are responsible for operating an Able to Serve van or mini-bus in a safe, attentive, and responsible manner at all times. This includes following all traffic laws, ensuring proper seatbelt use, assisting with safe loading and unloading, and maintaining awareness of participants’ needs throughout the trip.

No CDL is required. However, all drivers must complete a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, background check, and required volunteer training prior to serving. Driving opportunities occur each month, and volunteers can sign up for specific dates and trips that fit their availability. In addition to driving, volunteers may assist staff by supporting participants during outings as needed — offering a helping hand, providing encouragement, and helping ensure a smooth and positive experience for everyone involved.

Volunteer: Litter Pickup

Looking for a low-pressure, come-as-you-are way to make a real difference in the Coats community? Coats Municipal Park could use a little extra love, and Campbell students are invited to help keep our green spaces clean and welcoming for everyone.
This is a flexible, self-led volunteer opportunity with no set schedule, no sign-ups, no formal event. If you find yourself with a free hour between classes or want a quick way to give back, simply stop by the park at any time that works for you. Bring a friend or fly solo, take a walk, and help pick up litter along the pathways, fields, and play areas. Every small effort adds up, and your time directly supports a cleaner, safer space for families, pets, and visitors.
Gloves and trash bags are encouraged; filled bags can be placed next to any park trash can for staff to remove. Whether you swing by once or make it part of your weekly routine, your help strengthens the community in a big way.
Thank you for stepping up and showing what it means to care for your town one piece of litter at a time.

Volunteer: Sewers of all ages - experienced or brand new to sewing

We are looking for volunteers who want to learn to sew - or already have a love of sewing - who are also interested in giving back to their community by donating the items they make to people in the Triangle area.  Our diverse group is interested in learning, growing, helping others, and building friendships along the way. We make quilts, bags, fidget blankets, and much more that are then donated to those they would benefit. Our group provides education, sewing machines, and supplies for the items that are made.

You can sew at home or join our Sew with Us! events.

We are always looking for people who can help with our youth education programs.

Our website provides a lot of information about our programs and how you can help!

Volunteer: Children's Program

Volunteer Presenters for Creative and Life Skills Sessions
We are looking for volunteers who enjoy engaging with youth in meaningful, imaginative, and authentic ways. Presenters will work with either the 6–12 age group or the 13–18 age group, and they can choose to stay with one group or rotate between both.

These volunteers should feel comfortable tapping into their playful and creative side. The children come to our program right after school, so it’s important that the sessions do not feel like more classroom time. Presenters should design activities that are fun, expressive, relatable, and relevant to what the children are experiencing in their lives, especially as many of them are navigating the challenges of transitional housing.

The goal is to create a safe and inspiring space where children can open up, connect with one another, and explore new ideas and skills that help them imagine possibilities beyond their current circumstances. I am absolutely happy to support volunteers as they get comfortable, but it is important that they bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a genuine willingness to engage with the youth.

Weekly Program Volunteers for Thursday Evenings
We also need volunteers who can support our program consistently on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. These volunteers will assist the presenter for the evening, help guide and encourage the children, and support the overall flow of the classroom.

Volunteers may participate every Thursday or twice a month based on their schedule, and can work with the 6–12 group, the 13–18 group, or both.

Volunteer: Delivery Confirmation Caller

These volunteers support the Fresh Produce Program by calling and texting between 5-10 participants between Monday and Wednesday each week to confirm their upcoming Saturday deliveries. An email with instructions is sent to all volunteers at the beginning of each week. Volunteers have the assistance of a script and FAQ document to successfully complete calls. This role is KEY for making sure deliveries get to the right people/places, and helping us stay in touch with the households we serve. Relationship building is encouraged!

We ask that volunteers sign up for one semester or summer of delivery confirmation calling at a time. It is not required that callers sign up to volunteer as a Delivery Confirmation Caller every week during that period, but at least once every 2-3 weeks is encouraged.

IMPORTANT: We manage volunteer sign-ups outside of HandsOn Triangle.  If you would like to sign up to be a Delivery Confirmation Caller, and are prepared to do so for a full semester or summer, please email Elliot at elliot.yoon@duke.edu. One-hour caller training, as well as a short online HIPAA training, is required.

Volunteer: Delivery Driver

These volunteers will pick up produce bags from Uncle Harry's General Store (1925 Yearby Ave, Durham, NC 27705) on Saturdays between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM at their chosen time and deliver these items to participant homes. Driving may be up to a 2-hour commitment (eg, someone who picks up at 10:00 AM should plan to finish by 12:00 PM at the latest).

We routinely need 15-20 drivers to serve ~175 households each week. In order for us to generate driving routes based on an accurate headcount of drivers for the week, we ask that you sign up no later than 5 PM the day before distribution. Once routes are generated, an email with instructions will be sent to all volunteers within a few hours of their pick-up time. The more people who sign up, the quicker the routes are for everyone! We encourage you to bring along a friend for this role! Driving is much more fun with a buddy, who can help call participants to let them know that their delivery is on the way. HIPAA training required! Please see the google sheet below for more information on HIPPA.

IMPORTANT: We manage volunteer sign-ups on a Google Sheet outside of HandsOn Triangle. Please click here for instructions and to sign up! If the volunteer opportunity you are interested in has no open slots left, please consider signing up for a different day or role!

Volunteer: Short and Long Term Fosters

Have some extra love to share? Consider opening your home to a foster pet! Paws4ever’s Foster Program allows us to expand our capacity to rescue more animals and to support animals with special needs. Fostering is one of many ways to support Paws4ever as a volunteer.

Paws4ever will provide all the basic supplies you will need, including food, extra blankets or towels, and medical supplies if applicable. Of course, you may want to spoil your foster friend with some extra treats and toys, but we’ve got you covered for the basics.
