Volunteer: RSVP Emergency Child Care Volunteer

National Emergency Child Care Network is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity in Durham, North Carolina that provides free child care services to families who are experiencing an crisis or disaster. Our mission is to ensure every family has equal opportunity to access and utilize free emergency child care during a crisis or disaster.

We are recruiting Durham-based SENIOR volunteers to help local families who are in crisis or disasters. We've already helped (3) families in Durham with over 20 hours of free child care, families that desperately needed help and support. NEXT STEP: Please let us know which training you want to attend. All trainings are listed on our website under Volunteer Now: https://emergencychildcare.org/contact-2/

In only 5 months since the program was activated during Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, 115 Emergency Child Care Volunteers across 2 states (North Carolina and California) have provided 713 hours and 74 days of free emergency child care to 82 children and 50 families (96% in North Carolina). We now have over 400 volunteers registered to become active volunteers. All volunteers undergo trauma-informed training in Psychological First Aid, extensive vetting, and nationwide background checks to ensure they are qualified and screened to care for children. On average, our volunteers are activated 1-3 times per week to help families requesting emergency child care in North Carolina and California.

Our families really need you!! Please join our amazing group of volunteers.

We will provide volunteers with trauma training for children in disasters. We also provide you with a backpack of fun toys, reading books, coloring books and puzzles to play with the children. This is one-on-one child care so volunteers will need to be 18 and older and have reliable transportation. Skilled and trained volunteers are dispatched immediately after the family calls the crisis line for emergency child care services.

Volunteer child care providers will meet families at a disaster shelter, at the family's home, or where the disaster has occurred to ensure the safety and well-being of the children. While children are safe with a child care provider, the family has the time to deal with the crisis. This support, in result, reduces high levels of stress for the family, as well as the potential for violence, abuse, or neglect to the child during a crisis.

Child care after a disaster is a critical part of response and recovery. Studies have shown that children who have experienced trauma from disasters need extra time with caregivers to ask questions to understand the crisis, to talk about their experience, be listened to, have their feelings accepted, provided with a space to cry and express feelings, have special one-on-one playtime and extra attention, do something relaxing or fun, and feel safe, cared for, and loved (Helping Children and Youth Cope in the Aftermath of Disasters, SAMHSA). WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT Disasters are upsetting experiences for everyone involved, but especially for children. Disasters can leave children feeling frightened, confused, and insecure. Children may respond to disaster by demonstrating fears, sadness, or behavioral problems. Younger children may return to earlier behavior patterns, such as bedwetting, sleep problems and separation anxiety. Older children may also display anger, aggression, school problems or withdrawal. With so many natural disasters occurring today, and now the increase in school shootings, children are seeing and experiencing things they should not have to - being evacuated, seeing injured or dying people or animals, losing their home and belongings, losing immediate access to basic needs, being injured themselves, and feeling that their own lives are threatened. Children and families also suffer from post-disaster ongoing stress which includes transitional housing, living in shelters or hotels, losing contact with their friends and neighbors, losing things that are important to them, parental job loss, and the financial costs of reestablishing their previous living conditions. Children’s ability to cope with disaster or emergencies is often tied to the way parents cope. And, when parents are overwhelmed, sad, depressed, emotional, stressed and panicked, the children will not have the emotional care they need to heal. We can help children and families better cope when we provide them with social support systems such as free immediate child care when they need it most. Our program also brings incredible value to the volunteer care givers.

We are recruiting Durham-based volunteers to help local families who are in crisis or disasters.

Volunteer: Delivery Driver

These volunteers will pick up produce bags from Uncle Harry's General Store (1925 Yearby Ave, Durham, NC 27705) on Saturdays between 9:30 AM and 10:30 AM at their chosen time and deliver these items to participant homes. We encourage you to bring along a friend for this role! Driving is much more fun with a buddy, who can help call participants to let them know that their delivery is on the way. HIPAA training required! Please see the google sheet below for more information on HIPPA.

Volunteer: RSVP Bookkeeper

The Elna B. Spaulding Conflict Resolution Center is looking for a bookkeeper. This position would require approximately 3-4 hours a month. We could really use your attention to detail and focus to assist the organization with Bank Reconciliation, Financial Statements, and Payroll.

Volunteer: RSVP Activity Companion Volunteer

Overview

Every weekday from 10am-3pm, Reality Ministries welcomes between 25-35 adults with intellectual & developmental disabilities into our community center for a day of programs and activities: exercise, games, arts & crafts, lunch, Bible study, field trips, and more. We also ask Volunteers to join us in our evening groups Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8. Reality sends about four mailings a year. When we send these we need volunteers to help label, stuff, and seal. We generally have a three hour block of time to complete each of these mailings. Volunteers are a crucial presence at Reality through their commitment to building lasting friendships with participants. The hope of these weekly gatherings is to create a meaningful and fun atmosphere for people of all abilities to come together in friendship. It is important to note: Reality Ministries is not a place where volunteers come to do for people with disabilities, rather, it is a place where volunteers come alongside participants to be with them in relationship.

Responsibilities

Presence: : First and foremost, volunteers are expected to pursue friendships with Reality participants and other volunteers. Friendship, and the belonging it brings, is at the heart of our community. Communication: Volunteers commit to reading Reality emails and communicating with staff when you’re unable to make your commitment. Consistency: Volunteers are asked to choose the areas of interest they would like to spend time in. Whatever time you give we just ask for consistency.

Volunteer: Woodworking and shared woodshop space: we need you!

The Bull City Woodshop is piloting a program where people from the community can come into the shop and use the tools and space for their personal projects. We are working to create staffed hours where open shop members can receive supervision and support while on the tools. The volunteer's responsibility for this time would be to: Be present at their open shop hours shift, be available to address general safety/usability concerns for open shop members, report any incidents or tool maintenance needs, and ensure that members have cleaned up before leaving the shop.

Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to use this time to work on their own projects! The idea is to help grow the open shop community as a common learning space, but help ensure that everyone feels safe and supported while they work!
Please use this form to indicate your interest in availability in participating in staffed hours. We are ideally looking to find regular volunteers for one 3-hour week shift with a pool of volunteers who can be asked for their availability if the regular volunteer is not. Open Shop Hours are Monday - Friday 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm and Sunday 8:30 am - 11:30 am.

This program is CURRENTLY RUNNING, and we need your help to keep it going!

Volunteer: Delivery Confirmation Caller

These volunteers support the Fresh Produce Program by calling and texting between 5-10 participants between Monday and Wednesday each week to confirm their upcoming Saturday deliveries. An email with instructions is sent to all volunteers at the beginning of each week. Volunteers have the assistance of a script and FAQ document to successfully complete calls. One-hour caller training, as well as a short online HIPAA training, is required.

These small pieces of iron will be melted and poured, creating iron sculptures during our 10th Annual Iron Pour.

This volunteer opportunity is a physical activity. You'll be smashing metal scrap using sledgehammers! We provide safety gear (glasses, face shields, and shoe coverings), but YOU MUST wear denim pants and closed-toe shoes/boots.

This opportunity is a great stress reliever. Take out some of your frustrations and support the arts all at once!

Email ironpour@libertyartsnc.org if you have any questions

Agency: Liberty Arts

We are looking for volunteers to help us prepare for our biggest event of the year! On every Tuesday between now and mid May, from 5:30 to 7:30pm, come to Liberty Arts to participate in Iron Breaking.

Volunteer: Help Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Cultivate Our Geer Street Learning Garden!

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is a North Carolina based non-profit organization, and partner with the Feeding America Network. Our Learning Gardens fall under our "GROW" initiative - helping to combat food insecurity by bringing neighbors together to promote local food production.

The Geer Street Learning Garden is a flourishing urban green space located between one of the most vulnerable census tracts and one of the most prosperous business districts in Durham. The garden has twelve vegetable beds, community garden beds, fruit trees, an outdoor kitchen, a small greenhouse, a vermicompost system, a perennial rain garden, a pollinator garden and areas for community gatherings...all on only a quarter-acre lot!  Conveniently located in Durham’s urban food corridor, the garden neighbors include Reinvestment Partners, Farmer Foodshare, and an urban demonstration apiary managed by Bee Downtown. The heart of the Geer Street Learning Garden is the countless community partnerships we have built in Durham.

During a shift, volunteers will assist with general gardening tasks such as seasonal harvesting, packing, planting, weeding, pruning, mulching, and greenhouse work. Come prepared to bend, kneel, and lift medium to heavy items to complete our daily tasks.

Volunteer: RSVP Volunteer Golf Coaches

The SwingPals Vision is a world where every child feels valued and respected, free to pursue their passion and fulfill their mission..

Our mission is to build a foundation of health and strong character in children facing adversity. SwingPals uses golf as a medium through which students develop mindfulness and self-regulation skills, empowering them to pursue their passion and fulfill their potential to create positive change in their community. This holistic approach empowers students to step outside their comfort zones, challenge their status quo, and give them the self-efficacy to pursue their goals.

We are currently seeking passionate volunteers to join our team as golf coaches for in-school and afterschool programming. As a SwingPals coach, you are a guide for the students from the process of THINKING to DOING while swinging the golf club, helping them let go of control, explore their potential, and enjoy their golf game. You will support students to develop their social and emotional skills and be able to focus their mind in the moment to make purposeful, intentional choices. Beginner golfers are welcome and often make the best coaches!

Becoming a volunteer coach with SwingPals is about mentorship, empowerment, and creating meaningful connections. Our program helps students develop confidence, resilience, and mindfulness through the game, and your role as a coach is essential to that journey.

If you're ready to contribute to a brighter future for our children and our community, we invite you to get involved. Your support and coaching will make a significant difference in the lives of our students.
