Tour Docents
Expand your knowledge of the natural world and help each visitor find inspiration, enjoyment and a stronger connection to Duke Gardens by becoming a Tour Docent. Tour Docents bring their interests, energy, knowledge and passion to the Gardens to visitors by leading trolley and walking tours and sharing knowledge of Duke Gardens' history, horticultural displays and features, and activities to enhance visitors' experiences.

Commitment: 2 hours on Tues., Wed., Thur., or Fri. at 10:00 am or 2:00 pm
Time of Year: March - Nov.
Qualifications: A willingness to learn the orientation of the Garden, historical facts and horticultural features to orally communicate these to visitors is necessary. Able to attend core trainings and specialized docent trainings to stay informed of events, membership levels and changes within the Garden. If leading trolley tours, the ability to safely operate a trolley and be adept at driving through the garden while maintaining visitor safety is necessary. If leading walking tours, ability to adapt to varying weather conditions and garden terrain while administering tours and maintaining visitor safety is required.
Trainings: Tour docent training is on the job and includes observation and shadowing of current docents. Self-study of program materials is also recommended. All garden volunteers are required to participate in Core Knowledge Training which consists of a series of 3 courses totaling approximately 6 hours. These Core Knowledge Training classes are offered twice per year and need to be taken only once when it is convenient.
