Bilingual Exchange is a tutoring program for Latinx children, kindergarten through high school. Currently we have about 20 children enrolled. Our goal for our summer program is for them to maintain their English language skills (they speak Spanish in their homes) and to prepare them for the upcoming academic year.
We provide the children with a light breakfast and lunch. We tutor for about an hour and a half. We play games (in English) for about half an hour.
Ideally the children work with their tutor one on one so that personal relations are formed. Our tutors tell us that these relationships make the program particularly rewarding.
If the parents of the children want it, we provide tutors to help them with English conversational skills.
We accept high school volunteers as well as adult volunteers High schoolers work with the elementary school children. It is not required that volunteers speak Spanish, although if you are learning Spanish you might find some improvement in your Spanish language skills through this program.
