Volunteer: The Scrap Exchange Thrift and Reuse Store Opportunities

We offer several types of volunteer opportunities at our Thrift:


Cleaning the Stores + Tidying The Yard

Take our handy dandy cleaning cart and make the stores sparkle! This cart comes with a checklist that includes all the possible cleaning tasks for each store along with a duster, wet wipes, and several cleaning products. Great for folks who like a clean space and have attention to detail! This shift also includes picking up trash from the yard and lot, tidying the front bed and entrance area, and making sure we look good on the outside as well as the inside!


Clothes + Accessories Processing

This shift involves fixing clothes around the store, collecting hangers, tidying the floor, and processing clothes and accessories donations.


Frames + Housewares Processing

This shift involves processing our picture frames and housewares in our Thrift Store. Housewares includes kitchen items, decor, linens, and more.


We offer several types of volunteer opportunities at our Reuse Arts Center:


Bag + Box Processing 

For detail-oriented folks who love sorting, organizing, and supporting some of the grittier aspects of our mission of reuse! This shift involves sorting through bags we have accumulated over the week, and separating them into different usable and unusable categories. Additionally, you will break down cardboard boxes for recycling.


Cleaning the Stores + Tidying The Yard

Volunteer: Iron Breaking Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help us prepare for our biggest event of the year! On Tuesdays, from 5:30 to 8:30pm, come to Liberty Arts to participate in Iron Breaking.

Liberty Arts' 9th Annual Iron Pour is coming up on November 15th, 2025. In order to run an Iron Pour, our organization needs dozens of buckets of chip-sized pieces of iron. We receive larger pieces of iron through donations (radiators, bathtubs, etc) and these need to be broken down into small pieces. These small pieces of iron will be melted to create metal sculptures during our 9th Annual Iron Pour.

This volunteer opportunity is a physical activity. You'll be smashing metal scrap using hammers! We provide safety gear (glasses, face shields, and shoe coverings), but ask that you wear thicker clothing like denim, and closed-toe shoes/boots. 

This opportunity is a great stress reliever. Take out some of your frustrations and support the arts all at once!

The Nonprofit Training Program Coordinator/Manager helps to leads the delivery of The Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center (TNVLC) training programs. This includes the ongoing monthly training programs as well as the Service Enterprise program and other training opportunities.

Volunteer: Walk-Up Table Leader

These volunteers help us manage the Fresh Produce Program's distribution of free food items to members of the community who arrive at Uncle Harry's General Store (1925 Yearby Ave, Durham) during our Saturday distribution days as walk-ups. This includes 1) table set up, 2) management of our “take-a-number system” to facilitate food distribution on a first-come, first-served basis, 3) sharing handouts with local food bank information and information about the walk-up table process that folks may share with other members of the community, and 4) re-packing table contents for storage. Spanish proficiency is highly recommended.

Volunteer: Compost Driver

This volunteer will support the Fresh Produce Program by picking up food scraps at the end of Saturday's distribution (between 10-10:30am) and bringing it to the Duke Gardens for composting – about a 1-hour commitment.

The driver should have a vehicle with capacity to fit the week's compost – approximately three 27-gallon bins and/or trash bags with additional compost. A tarp will be provided to keep your vehicle clean and a cart is available to assist with transporting the compost once at the gardens. After transport, the bins, tarp, and cart  will be returned. 

We highly encourage volunteers in this role to be physically able and/or to bring a friend along, as the compost bins can be heavy (~25-70 lbs each). Duke Gardens volunteer opportunities are ongoing opportunities that require a commitment of 2-4 hours per week for a minimum of six months. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to apply.

Days & Times needed: Tuesday or Wednesday mornings, (8 a.m-noon), year-round as weather permits. 

Qualifications & Skills: Woodworker Assistants maintain benches, fences, and other wooden structures in the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum. 

Woodworking experience is a must!Some garden experience or some plant knowledge is a plus.Must be able to lift to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel on various terrain while performing tasks outdoors in varying weather conditions in the presence of insects and poison ivy.Ability to comfortably carry and safely operate woodworking tools (sander, saw, etc.) and other garden/carpentry tools.Attention to detail is key. Manual dexterity (hand and finger movement) is necessary.  After volunteers are comfortable with the scope of assigned tasks, they must be able to work in a small group, independent of horticulture staff or consult staff with questions related to assigned tasks.

Volunteer: Food Pantry Volunteers

Covid-19 brought to light the heartbreaking extent of food insecurity in our community. Iglesia Emanuel, together with a large group of dedicated volunteers, has responded to this challenge with a weekly food pantry, providing large boxes and bags of nutritious and culturally appropriate food. Volunteers work in 2-hour shifts, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, making it possible for us to serve over 600 families a week. Students aged 14 and up are welcome to volunteer on their own. Children aged 10 and up are welcome to volunteer under the supervision of a parent or other accompanying adult. Volunteers need to be over 18 for traffic control positions.

In addition to volunteering on site, you can help support this ministry by donating shelf stable food or bags of rice and beans. We always need more protein items (canned chicken, tuna, or peanut butter), cereal, and other nutritious food to complement the fresh produce that we give.

Volunteer: Junior Coach Opportunity at Girls on the Run Triangle

Serving as a Junior Coach is a fun and rewarding way to get involved with Girls on the Run! This volunteer position is for high school students aged 16-18 years old who want to grow their leadership skills. Paired with a Mentor Coach, Junior Coaches receive support to develop their own skills while serving as role models to program participants.

Junior Coaches also have the opportunity to receive the Commissioners' Award for hours volunteered this season.
