2026 Volunteer of the Year Event

(Honoring the Governor's Volunteer Service Award and Key Volunteer of the Year Award Volunteers across the Triangle)


Where: DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 William V Bill Bell Way

When: Based on job selected, event runs from 2 PM - 4 PM

Help us celebrate and honor Volunteers across the Triangle who make such a difference in our community. 



Volunteer Areas

Volunteer Orientation for all areas will be held at 12:15PM, even if your duties begin later.


Set Up (12:30pm - 2pm) (4 People)

Duties: Help us get  organized and set up for the event. We will be setting up tables for registration and nametags, setting up the stage with certificates and our other awards, setting up a reserved section in the theatre and more!


Registration (12:30pm - 3pm) (6 People)

Duties: Check off attendees as they arrive, and direct them to the nametag station. There will be Squares for people to purchase tickets if needed. Reset the registration table into the Certificate pick up table for the end of the event.


Nametags (12:30pm - 2:30pm (4 People)

Duties: Assist attendees with finding their nametag(s). Keep name tags organized in alpha-order by last name, or by group. If someone doesn’t have a name tag, give them a blank one.


Ushers (12:30pm - 4:30pm): (5 People)

Duties: Help guests find their seats, direct nominees and their guests to the reserved seating at the front of the auditorium. Help guests find the restrooms and other amenities within DPAC. 


Certificate Table (2:30pm - 4:30pm): (2 People)

Duties: Announcements will be made to let attendees know to pick up their certificates at the end of the event, some folks may come over before the end of the event to pick up and you will be responsible for making sure they sign off that they received their certificate and distribute correct envelope. You can also package the certificates by group.


Photographer & Photo Booth Attendees (12:30pm - 4:30pm: (4 People)

Duties: We will have a photo booth set up for people to get their picture taken with their award and before the event to get group photos. We will have a camera and tripod for this. We will also need someone to record the names of each person or group at the Photo Booth. We would additionally like another photographer with their own camera to take pictures of the ceremony itself! Shot list will be provided.

Join us as we distribute backpacks filled with school supplies to local students in need from August 10-13. Volunteers will help ensure each child receives the tools they need for a strong start to the school year. Your time and energy can make a big difference in just a few hours!

Tasks include: Unloading backpack donations from sponsors, sorting and organizing backpacks by grade level, confirming each backpack contains the correct school supplies, assisting social workers as they pick up backpacks for the students they serve

Volunteer: Student Summer Programs Volunteer

The Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center is seeking enthusiastic and dependable volunteers to support our Summer Leadership Programs for high school students.

Volunteers will assist with daily programming, mentor students, support nonprofit service projects, and help create a positive and engaging learning environment throughout the summer. This role is ideal for individuals interested in youth development, nonprofit leadership, education, civic engagement, or community service.

We strongly prefer volunteers who are available for an entire program week or multiple days throughout the summer to help provide consistency in planning and logistics. 

Program Details

Location: On-site in Durham, NC (with exception of August 3-7 in Raleigh and July 6-10 at UNC Chapel Hill)
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm
Volunteer Term: June 1-August 7
Transportation: Volunteers must provide their own transportation to program sites within Durham.

Volunteer Responsibilities may include:

• Assisting staff with daily program activities and logistics

CELI is an intensive leadership experience focused on civic engagement, social impact, and understanding community challenges. Students hear from community leaders and complete a Capstone Project presented to local judges.

Model United Nations
Dates: July 6-10, July 27-31

Model UN helps students build leadership, diplomacy, public speaking, and debate skills while exploring global issues and civic engagement through simulation activities facilitated in partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill.

Volunteer: Oral History Program Advisor

Position Overview:

We are currently seeking an individual with teaching and/or writing experience to volunteer as an Oral History Program Advisor. As a volunteer, you will help train a group of high school students in question writing and interview techniques, as well as edit and revise their written narratives. This volunteer will also be responsible for layout and design of booklets using Canva. This position reports to our Marketing & Community Engagement Manager, and offers a unique opportunity to preserve and share valuable personal narratives and contribute to the preservation of collective memory while developing leadership, editing, and graphic design skills.

Responsibilities:

Project Management: Collaborate with the organization's leadership to schedule trainings and interviews throughout the span of the project.  Volunteer Training: Coordinate with our staff to train a team of high school student volunteers on best practices for developing questions and conducting interviews. Quality Control: Review the oral history narratives that students write, edit them for clarity, lay out the booklets using Canva and be sure to maintain consistency in formatting and appearance.  Community Outreach: Promote the oral history program within the community, establish partnerships with relevant organizations, and explore opportunities for collaboration and participation. Project Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the oral history program, gather feedback from participants and volunteers, and make recommendations for improvement. Ethical Considerations: Uphold ethical guidelines for conducting oral history interviews, including informed consent, privacy, and the responsible use of personal information.

Position Overview:

We are currently seeking an individual with teaching and/or writing experience to volunteer as an Oral History Program Advisor. As a volunteer, you will help train a group of high school students in question writing and interview techniques, as well as edit and revise their written narratives. This volunteer will also be responsible for layout and design of booklets using Canva. This position reports to our Marketing & Community Engagement Manager, and offers a unique opportunity to preserve and share valuable personal narratives and contribute to the preservation of collective memory while developing leadership, editing, and graphic design skills.

Responsibilities:

Project Management: Collaborate with the organization's leadership to schedule trainings and interviews throughout the span of the project.  Volunteer Training: Coordinate with our staff to train a team of high school student volunteers on best practices for developing questions and conducting interviews. Quality Control: Review the oral history narratives that students write, edit them for clarity, lay out the booklets using Canva and be sure to maintain consistency in formatting and appearance.  Community Outreach: Promote the oral history program within the community, establish partnerships with relevant organizations, and explore opportunities for collaboration and participation. Project Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the oral history program, gather feedback from participants and volunteers, and make recommendations for improvement. Ethical Considerations: Uphold ethical guidelines for conducting oral history interviews, including informed consent, privacy, and the responsible use of personal information.
