Who We Are

We believe that everyone should have access to safe and affordable transportation regardless of race, wealth, gender identity, ability or where they live. Biking and walking are the most healthy and sustainable ways to move.

What We Do

Bike Durham advocates to local and state government to invest in infrastructure that supports sustainable transportation:  walking, bicycling, rolling and using transit.  We accomplish our work through our education program which serves school age children.  We go into Durham Public Schools and teach bike and walk safety over a 4 week period through the student's PE class.  We take the bikes, helmets, curriculums and bike educators to the schools.  We bring a school and community-wide end of program celebration on a Saturday morning.  Bike Durham hosts events like Move A Bull City, a celebration of sustainable transportation, World Day of Remembrance, Ride of Silence and several events during National Bike Month in May.  We also participate in community-based events like Book Harvest's Summer Block Party, Juneteenth and Earth Day.  Finally, we accomplish our work through a robust Advocacy Committee made up of volunteer supporters and members who meet monthly and break up into task forces around specific issues, for example advocating for Mangum/Roxboro to be a two way street and protected bike lanes along Erwin Road.  We can't accomplish this work without volunteers and look forward to working with you to find how you can best contribute.
