Who We Are
In 1984, Thad and Alice Eure, owners of the Angus Barn Restaurant, established the Foundation of Hope for Research and Treatment of Mental Illness after their son Thad, Jr. was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The Eures charged the Foundation with investing in groundbreaking scientific research and mental health initiatives. Today, much of this support manifests in awarding seed grants to the UNC Department of Psychiatry and its affiliated programs. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 172 scientific research grants totaling more than $7.4 million. Today, The Foundation raises more than $1 million annually from generous donors and volunteers who participate in the Walk for Hope and the Evening of Hope. Investing in early-stage scientific research fills an unmet need for funding new and innovative research projects and has a multiplier effect of launching successive research projects that impact thousands of lives.
