Who We Are

Founded in 1976 as the Triangle’s first community orchestra, the Durham Symphony Orchestra is now a professional group, representative of Durham as its “People’s orchestra.” In 2009, conductor/composer William Henry Curry became Music Director, focusing on education, outreach, and new arts partnerships. As the only African American Music Director of a symphony in the South (and a champion of American music), his diversity in programming has transformed our work. We perform opera selections, symphonic works from Baroque to contemporary, and the best of American popular genres (jazz, gospel, bluegrass, hip hop, Broadway, Hollywood)

What We Do

Each Durham Symphony Orchestra concert includes an American composer. New works and works by women and composers of color are featured often, as are a diverse array of guest artists. Educational concerts and mentorship programs are central to our work. We are committed to demonstrating, especially to young people, that the joy of orchestral music belongs to everyone as a natural part of robust community life.
