Who We Are
Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet (www.noisefree.org) is the nation's leading advocacy organization for peace and quiet. A Census Bureau report indicates that noise is Americans' #1 complaint about their neighborhood and the primary reason they wish to move. Also, more than 85 percent of complaints to New York City's quality of life hotline concern noise.
Excessive noise is a major public health concern. High levels of noise are related to sleep deprivation, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing of the ears), heart disease, headaches, fatigue, decreased educational and job performance, and aggravated behavior.
What We Do
Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet undertakes many activities to educate the public about the hazards of noise and to reduce noise levels, including:
-Advocacy efforts at the state, local, and national levels. We have more than 50 local chapters in more than 25 states. In addition, we have made four advocacy trips to Washington, DC.
-Providing advice to victims of excessive noise. We have helped hundreds of individuals with noise problems, through our "Ask an Expert" service. A noise control engineer and an expert on vehicle noise provide advice, free of charge.
-Generating publicity about the harms of excessive noise. Each month, we issue a "Noisy Dozen" award, highlighting a particularly noisy community, business, industry, or individual. These press releases (and other outreach efforts) have generated more than 400 media stories about noise, including appearances on "20/20" and NPR and stories in The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.
-A book on illegal motorcycle after-market equipment, published in 2017 by Linden Publishing of Fresno, California. The book is a visual guide to illegal equipment, intended to make it easier for law enforcement officials to issue citations. www.motorcyclenoise.net
